Madison McQueen

A Bold Website for Courageous Storytellers

Madison McQueen, also known as MadMac, is a team based in California and made up of filmmakers, storytellers, and television producers. They came to us looking to redesign and redevelop their simple website to create a modern and dynamic platform to showcase their work.

Producing Creative as Courageous as you.

Drawing Inspiration From The Logo

Inspired by the square used in MadMac’s logo, we played up this shape in various ways throughout the design. We used it as an element to contain headline text, as an indicator on hover—both in the navigation and on project thumbnails, as well as on the home page hero video resizing to a square on scroll.

We wanted the design to feel modern, bold, and courageous to match the MadMac brand. We selected a bold, clean serif font for section titles and headlines, strategically incorporated pops of red throughout (careful not to distract from their work), and kept the overall design clean and simple—letting their work tell the story.

About

Building a Dynamic Experience

Given that their work is primarily film, we needed to demonstrate it through movement, rather than still images. We did this by incorporating large background videos that auto play (muted of course), as well as short video clips that play on hover.

In addition to video, we included subtle text animations, enlarged the showreel video on scroll, and background color transitions.

With all the video and animation in place, it was important for our development team to make sure everything was served up in a way that is speedy and seamless across any device—and we did just that. The site was recognized as a 2024 Web Excellence Award winner. But don’t take our word for it, check it out and see for yourself!

Courageous Creative

As with most of our websites, we built the site on WordPress, which gives the client flexibility to make future updates on their own. Individual project pages were designed with a collage-style layout, allowing each to be unique depending on the content MadMac decided to feature. They have the ability to feature multiple hero videos, behind-the-scenes images, GIFs, or video of varying sizes and alignment, as well as text blocks so they can explain the ideas and insights that went into creating the work.

We added a project filter on the main work page, making it easy for users to view only the type of work they are interested in, such as commercials, documentaries, corporate, political, or theatrical.
